Mark Schauer, National Democratic Redistricting Committee to speak at RISE Above Conference on Saturday, January 21, 2017.
Former Congressman Mark Schauer represented Michigan’s 7th District from 2009-2011.
The son of a public school teacher and registered nurse, Mark followed their paths to public service as a community organizer, urban planner, and executive director of a regional anti-poverty agency.
Mark was elected Battle Creek City Commissioner, state Representative, and state Senator, rising to the post of Democratic Leader. As a member of the historic 111th Congress, Mark proudly locked arms with President Obama and Speaker Pelosi to turn our country around, casting key votes for the Affordable Care Act and the Recovery Act, among others.
Always representing GOP gerrymandered districts, Schauer is known as a fierce campaigner, defeating Republican incumbents to join the state House and U.S. House.
After leaving Congress, Mark co-chaired the BlueGreen Alliance Jobs 21 campaign, a labor-environmental partnership to grow the clean energy economy, led energy job creation efforts for union Laborers in Michigan, and joined the Jobs With Justice board of directors. Mark currently serves as senior advisor to the National Democratic Redistricting Committee, shaping Democrats’ plan for the next round of redistricting.
In 2014, Mark was the Democratic nominee for Governor of Michigan.
Mark holds a B.A. from Albion College, a Master of Public Administration from Western Michigan University, and an M.A. in Political Science from Michigan State University.
Mark and his wife Christine live in Battle Creek, Michigan, and share three grown children and five grandchildren.
